Second half thriller FEU was firmly in control, 51-41, late in the third period when UST began its fightback to turn the second half of the game into a thriller. The Growling Tigers unleashed 16 straight points capped by a jumper by veteran guard Daquioag for a 57-51 lead midway through the final period. But instead of folding, the Tamaraws struck back, taking the lead, 61-60, with less than two minutes on a three-pointer by Pogoy. Tolomia followed that up with a strong drive for a 63-60 edge with a minute to go.
The Growling Tigers remained within striking distance, 64-62, down the stretch after free throws by Daquioag. But the Tamaraws prevented the Growling Tigers from scoring the rest of the way to hold on for the victory. With the championship win, FEU eased the pain of its runner-up finish in last season’s finals. The same, however, could not be said for UST, which has now finished runner-up in three of the last four seasons of the UAAP.
